What you should know before buying a sink

Do you want to know more? read our ULTIMATE GUIDE to choosing a kitchen sink.

In theory it is not difficult to choose a kitchen sink. All you need to do is choose the material, color and size.

In practice, you have to account for a number of things in order to avoid cutting the cabinet to fit the sink, changing the kitchen countertop or the draining kit, and complaining about bad positioning of the sink which makes typical kitchen operations a hassle.

As a kitchen sink manufacturer we have heard of just about any issue experienced by people who have not properly thought their sink choice through. In this article we will share our experience with you and tell you:

  1. how to choose a sink and a tap so that your spine doesn’t hurt while doing the dishes
  2. where NOT to install a sink
  3. why it is better to buy a granite sink with ready-made holes
  4. which countertop material to choose
  5. how NOT to choose sink color
  6. the most important features of a good kitchen faucet
  7. how to get rid of stains from a granite sink

Let’s now answer these questions.

How to choose a sink and a tap so that your spine doesn’t hurt while doing the dishes

When you are washing the dishes from time to time you need to reach to the water stream, e.g. to soak a washing sponge.

Now, when the stream is too far away you need to lean or hunch over.

Obviously having the stream too far away is not ideal. People get tired quicker and those with back problems may feel very uncomfortable.

How not to find yourself in this situation? Let’s see the solutions.

  1. Buy a sink that has a very narrow bowl – so that the faucet can be placed closer to the person.
  2. Choose a sink in which the faucet can be installed as close to the person washing the dishes as possible. You need to look for those with a very narrow “frame” around the bowl(s).
  3. Buy a faucet in which the spout has a long reach and water outlet is at least 6 inches above the countertop level.
  4. Mount the faucet next to the bowl rather than behind it.

Also, you may find our visual sink size comparison tool invaluable in your search for a perfect sink. It will show you exactly how big a sink is in comparison with others. This in turn will make it possible for you to choose the one that suits your needs best.

Where NOT to install a sink

Sinks come in various shapes and sizes.

Such a wide selection enables customers to choose sinks that best fit their kitchens. However, what customers very often don’t take into consideration is … the space next to the sink.

For practical reasons, it is best not to install the sink:

  1. immediately next to the cooktop – dirty water and the washing-up liquid may get into your food
  2. with the bowl located in the immediate vicinity of the fridge or wall – the washing-up is inconvenient with a fridge or wall right beside
  3. underneath a low hanging cabinet – such a cabinet makes it difficult to wash, remove or put large objects into the sink, and – if you are tall – it will block your view when doing the washing-up
  4. by the window – when installing a sink by the window, you should be aware that a convenient place for a plates drier in the cabinet above the sink will no longer be available. In addition, the faucet may cause inconvenience while opening and closing the window.

Plus, if you are planning to install a food shredder, you need to allow for a lot of space under the sink.

Why it is better to buy a granite sink with ready-made holes

Granite sinks can be divided into those which:

  1. have mounting holes made by the manufacturer
  2. have no holes but there are places where they can be punched and sanded on one’s own
  3. have no holes or special places for them, in which case they must be made with a special drill bit

For obvious reasons, punching a hole is not an ideal solution – it can sometimes result in chipping the edge of the hole, which cannot be compensated for by sanding. Please note that such a defect is not covered by the warranty.

Additionally, if you decide to buy a sink with holes to be punched, you will not be able to make them elsewhere without drilling. And drilling a hole in a sink requires a special drill bit, a handle and, obviously, time.

What is more, there have been instances of sinks breaking up during both the drilling and the punching process. For this reason, the fitters with no experience with this sometimes refuse to make holes because they do not want to take responsibility for any damage to the sink.

Which countertop material you should choose

A kitchen countertop, together with an appropriate sink, are the most displayed and visible elements of the kitchen. However, you should consider carefully the choice of the material for the countertopas any bad decision here will stand out for years to come.

Stone, granite or composite will be good for both undermount and drop in sinks.

Undermount sinks generally shouldn’t be installed under tops made of laminated chipboard due to the difficulty of providing proper protection for the edges of laminated countertop against water.

A real wood countertop, despite having a beautiful look, will also not be a good choice in most kitchens.

Why not?

Wooden countertops are not very resistant to long-term effects of water so they require impregnation. Only oak and teak wood, which are more resistant, are an exception. However, even if you have a countertop made of such wood and carry out regular impregnations, you should remember to constantly wipe off stains so that the wood does not swell and deform over the years.

For this reason, we recommend a wooden countertop only to people who use the kitchen occasionally and wash the dishes mainly in the dishwasher.

How NOT to choose the sink colour

We often hear an opinion that the it is best to select sink color directly in the shop.

However, the truth is that by choosing color this way you are not able to determine what it will look like in our kitchen.

Why not?

Because the same sink will look different in the shop and in your home. Lighting conditions and colors in the kitchen directly influence sink’s presentation.

It is even worse if you buy online and choose color only when looking at a photo on screen.

The colors on screens vary depending on the technology of the display, its settings, as well as the camera and lighting used during the product photoshoot.

So what is the best way to choose the color of your sink?

Order color samples. In our store you can order color samples completely free of charge. If you order them today, within a week you will receive 5 x 5 cm samples made of the same granite composite as our sinks.

What are the most important features of a good kitchen faucet

In the past practically in every kitchen one could find traditional solutions with two faucets – one for hot and one for cold water. Some of them were fitted to the sink, whereas others to the countertop or the wall. However, all of them had the same disadvantages – a low-positioned water outlet from the spout with a very poor reach.

This made it difficult to, e.g. pour water into the kettle, take large pots in or out of the sink and accounted for back problems.

Such faucets are still available, but we warn anyone who looks at them with sentiment. A good faucet should have a water outlet placed at least 6 inches above countertop and should have a reach big enough so that you can easily reach the stream without leaning. Only then will it be easy and convenient to use the sink.

Going one step further an ideal solution is a faucet that not only has a high water outlet but also a pull-down sprayer. This is an invaluable solution in all kitchens.

How to clean a granite sink

Sometimes you may come across opinions in the Internet that stains on dark colored granite sinks are difficult to remove. Is that true?

The main reason for the formation of stains is the high content of scale in the water. In order to prevent scale from settling on the sink, it is enough to regularly wipe the sink with a washing-up liquid and dry it with a cloth. The sink can also be impregnated with cooking oil so that scale settles on it more slowly.

However, if the scale content in the water is high and you haven’t cleaned the sink for a long time, larger stains may appear. In order to get rid of them we recommend that the sink is wiped with a kitchen sponge with a bit of bleach and dried with a cloth a few minutes later.

We warn against using strong caustic agents and scrubbing with wire scourers. Using them may irreparably damage the surface of the sink.
